This one-day (7-hour) training course enables participants to learn how to effectively investigate simple workplace incidents.
By learning lessons from these events and implementing improvement actions, organizations can prevent similar incidents from recurring and enhance their overall health and safety performance.

Developed jointly by NEBOSH and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), this course teaches a structured and methodical approach to gathering, analyzing, and managing information related to an incident.

At the end of the training, participants will be able to:

Understand why it is essential to carry out incident investigations.
Identify how human and organizational factors contribute to incidents.
Independently conduct an investigation into a simple incident.
Collect, analyze, and interpret evidence, including witness statements.
Develop an action plan to prevent the recurrence of an incident.
Contribute to team investigations for more complex incidents.
Strengthen their organization’s safety culture through a proactive approach.

This training is intended for anyone required to investigate incidents within their organization, including:

Employers and managers,
Supervisors,
Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) officers and representatives,
Union representatives and employee delegates.

Les prérequis

No specific prerequisites are required.

A good level of English is recommended for the English version of the course.

A basic understanding of health and safety principles is desirable.

Module INV1: Introduction to Incident Investigation

Element 1: Understand why incident investigations are carried out and how human and organizational factors contribute to them.
Element 2: Understand how to effectively investigate an incident and carry out an investigation with confidence.

Teaching Methods

Case study based on an incident scenario (maintenance, office, or warehouse).
Practical exercise: review of evidence and development of an action plan.
Course materials and learning documentation provided.

Assessment / Examination

Online (E-learning):

Download and complete the assessment template provided on the platform.
The learner analyzes the available evidence and submits their report to NEBOSH/Astutis.

Virtual Classroom:

Practical assessment at the end of the course:

Analysis of an incident file,
Viewing of three witness interviews,
Preparation of an action plan aimed at preventing a recurrence of the incident.

The assessment focuses on the participant’s ability to understand, analyze, and propose concrete corrective measures.

Certification:

Upon completion of the training and successful validation of the practical assessment, participants will be awarded the NEBOSH HSE – Introduction to Incident Investigation certificate.

The program e-learning is delivered as a self-paced without an instructor. Participants may progress at their own pace once enrolled. Access provided to the platform is 3 months.
